Contended Taxi Driver and a Kid
2007/04/18,02:24

Two days ago, I boarded a taxi. Wanting not to be caught by surprise on the fare, which usually happens,I asked my friend on what the expected fare to my destination would be. He said Rupees.250 (Indian Currency).

Along the way, I needed to stop a couple of times to purchase some essentials. Along with the meter in the taxi, the meter in my mind also was running, definitely much faster!

Upon reaching the destination, I was surprised, but a contrary surprise. The fare was Rs.195. Happily, I offered the driver a tip which he refused stating that he was happy with the fare.....

This incident reminded me of an event in my college days. I used a bicycle then, for commute in the college campus and also on the city roads. Even the 'tractor tyre' type bicycle tyre was punctured several times, much to the heroics that I attempted with that poor thing!

One day, I was at a bicycle shop where one of the kids, a 8 year old I guess, attended to the repair work meticulously. Moved by his work and sympathetic to his situation of having to work at such an young age, I offered him a tip. He looked in my eyes and in an even voice refused to accept it.

For days, his face and voice were lingering on my mind and ears....
